A successful company is not just about making money. We believe that there is a social and environmental side to any business. Sometimes companies have the potential to spark social change and bring a sense of stability to areas that are marked by war and violence.
This is very much the case in the Democratic Republic of Congo where battles between the government and rebel groups have been going on for years.
In the thick of the violence and killings telecommunications company Tigo does a great job of protecting the telecom network and enable local communication in the country. Tigo does not only create jobs, the company helps create stability and make it possible for people to communicate with each other. In the case of Congo communication is very much part of the solution that will hopefully bring peace to the region one day.
It is important that companies such as Tigo acknowledge their responsibilities towards local communities. More often than not, success in this field goes hand in hand with economic success and increased revenue. Therefore, we at Nordea make a great effort so support Tigo and other companies that show responsibility and give something back to the people around them.
Minerals – a blessing in disguise?
- The Democratic Republic of Congo is located in Central Africa. It is the second largest country in Africa by area and has a population of over 79 million.
- There is an enormous amount of mineral wealth throughout the south and east of the Congo, making it accessible to mining. Cobalt, copper, cadmium, diamonds, gold, silver, zinc, tin, uranium, radium, bauxite, iron ore and coal are all found in plentiful supply.
- These minerals are one of the reasons for the civil war that has been going on in Congo since 1996, killing millions in the process.
